Got questions? We have answers!

Eleven questions people ask us before buying a cask. Anything that isn't here, ask us directly.

01Can the whisky spoil?

With a spirit like whisky, which contains at least 40% alcohol by volume, this is rare to the point of being almost impossible. In the vast majority of the few recorded cases where a whisky cask did spoil, the cask was very old (around 50 years).

02How long does it take to sell a whisky cask?

A whisky cask is not a share, so it is not sold at the click of a button: it is a physical asset, much like a property. We put every contact we have to work to sell the cask on your terms. Our experience in the market shows that a sale rarely takes more than a few weeks, and is usually a matter of days. At MyWhisky we earn our fee only once the cask is sold, so we do everything we can to make the sale efficient and quick while maximising your profit.

03Can I see my cask?

Of course! If you would like to visit your cask in Scotland, we can arrange a visit to the warehouse where it is held. Bear in mind that a bonded warehouse is not a visitor centre and cannot host guests at any given moment, so it is always best to coordinate in advance and make sure the visit can go ahead.

04How do I know the cask really belongs to me?

The cask is purchased directly from the licensed bodies in the UK, and they issue the certificate of ownership in your name. In other words, you are registered as the sole owner of the asset.

05Can the value of whisky fall?

In the world of investing anything can happen, and that is part of the risk that comes with any investment. That said, we take care to hedge risk comprehensively, and to date we have not encountered a whisky cask falling in value.

06How will I know what my cask is worth over the years?

Once a year, professional valuers in the UK carry out a market valuation of the cask. Following the valuation you receive an annual report covering the state of the whisky market, the value of your assets and a strategic assessment from your portfolio manager.

07Where are my whisky casks held?

Our clients' casks are held across Scotland in licensed warehouses certified by the Scottish alcohol regulator, where warehouse staff maintain optimal storage conditions and check the condition and health of every cask on an ongoing basis.

08What is the angels' share?

The “angels' share” is the name given to the natural evaporation that takes place in whisky casks over the years. Like any liquid, some of the whisky in the cask evaporates over time (on average about 2% a year of the cask's current contents). Our cask valuations already take this evaporation into account, in the understanding that it affects every cask on the market.

09What happens if my cask is damaged?

That is exactly what the insurance is for! The casks are insured by some of the largest insurers in the UK against all damage and theft, based on the annual valuation. Your asset is insured at its current value!

10Can I taste my whisky, or use it?

Of course! The whisky cask is yours in every respect! You can ask for a sample or a bottle to be drawn from your cask at any time.

11What are MyWhisky's advantages?

  • Legal ownership and full security: Ownership registered directly in your name (an official Delivery Order document), alongside storage in regulated bonded warehouses and a comprehensive insurance policy throughout the years of maturation.
  • Ongoing management, peace of mind: Continuous monitoring and oversight, including periodic reports on the cask's value and the condition of the spirit.
  • A shared interest in the exit: We guide you through the sale at the end of the term and earn only when you do, which ensures we do everything we can to maximise your return.
